Each year, the Gunnison Valley Animal Welfare League finds permanent, loving homes for many homeless animals that have been relinquished to the GVAWL or abandoned within Gunnison County.
Throughout the history of our organization, we have found homes for nearly 2,000 homeless animals. In 2004, more than 80 cats and dogs were adopted out by the GVAWL, and in 2005 more than 110 were adopted.
The GVAWL is here to help you find the best cat or dog to bring into your home. The GVAWL is here to make permanent, loving matches of pets to individuals and families. Perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of animal rescue, finding loving and permanent homes for animals in need is the essence of our organization.
We take special care to ensure that animals are placed into loving homes and that the pets we adopt to individuals and families are a good match for one another. That is why we follow special policies regarding requirements for homeless pet adoption within Gunnison County.

| How to Adopt a Pet from the GVAWL |
- Until our shelter/adoption center is built, GVAWL volunteers will staff our office, starting September 12, for a few hours a week, so that people interested in adopting our pets may learn more about them and pick up our adoption applications. - A GVAWL representative will contact you regarding current companion-animals available for adoption.

- An Adoption Coordinator will review your application and either approve or disapprove it.
- If approved, the Adoption Coordinator will get you and the companion-animal together for a trial period, and ask that you spend ample time with the pet to ensure that a good match has been made between you and your new pet.
- If you choose to adopt the companion-animal, you will need to sign an Adoption Contract and pay an adoption fee. The adoption fee includes spaying or neutering, a wellness exam, and at least some vaccinations.
