Under this Program, GVAWL finds permanent homes for relinquished, abandoned, and rescued companion-animals. Animals requiring veterinary attention are treated, and all unsterilized animals are spayed or neutered before adoption. While waiting for their permanent homes, our companion-animals are boarded or fostered.
Great care is taken to ensure that companion-animals are placed in homes that provide the best match between the animal and the adopter. That is why we follow specific policies regarding adoption of our companion-animals.
Foster homes must meet both GVAWL and State of Colorado requirements, and must “pass” GVAWL inspection. Foster-home providers are given training and consistent support by the GVAWL. Providing a foster home for a homeless companion-animal is perhaps one of the most rewarding of our volunteer experiences, and foster homes are always needed.
The Animal Care Program also manages relatively small feral-cat colonies. Cats are provided with food and water every day, and are periodically trapped (in humane traps) and taken to local veterinarians for vaccination and spaying/neutering. The cats are then returned to their colonies. This practice of Trap/Vaccinate/Neuter and Return is called TNVR, and is recommended by all national humane and veterinary associations.
