Outreach
The Gunnison Valley Community Foundation and the Animal Welfare League are proud to bring the award winning Kind News publication to grades 2, 3, and 4 in the Gunnison RE1J school district. Kind News is a program of the Humane Society which focuses on teaching kids to be kind and respectful to animals.
Now a colorful and inviting 8-page magazine, Kind News has a brand-new look and format this school year.
GVAWL introduced the Kind News program in 2010, and had such an excellent response from kids and teachers alike that we were able to expand the program for the 2011-2012 school year.
Filled with the colorful articles, short features, and fun activities that children and teachers love, Kind News maintains its emphasis on the importance of treating animals with kindness and respect. Topics like proper pet care and wildlife appreciation grab students’ interest and make abstract values like compassion, citizenship, and responsibility come alive.
Aligned with National Education Standards for the major subject areas, Kind News is used across the curriculum and has become the most widely used humane education resource for teachers, parents, and animal sheltering professionals.
